What your MOT doesn't check
An MOT is a safety check on the day, not a service. Here's what it leaves out.
Published 03/10/2026
An MOT confirms your car met minimum road safety and emissions standards on the day of the test. It is not a health check of the whole car.
What the MOT does not cover
- Engine, clutch and gearbox condition. The tester won't assess wear inside them.
- Oil level and quality. Old oil is one of the biggest causes of engine wear.
- Timing belt or chain. A snapped belt can wreck an engine, and it is never inspected.
- Coolant and antifreeze strength.
- Brake fluid condition. Brake performance is tested, but not the age of the fluid.
- Bodywork away from structural areas, and most electrics beyond lights and warning lamps.
What to do
Book a service alongside your MOT. Many member garages offer a combined price, and a service catches the wear an MOT ignores.
